"If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you'll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don't feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth." That is the first line in our book and it just grabbed me. It made me want to keep reading and I did. I've know read 3 chapters just last night. I really hope that it has the same influence on you to girls!
I agree with you Emma. I believe I am going to like this book very much as well. I have read a few chapters and a like this guy. I laugh when I read his language. =) For example "Boy, his bed was like a rock." He says Boy almost all the time. And he use bad language every once in a while. I like the boy's language. It is funny to read. I was surprised that he like to read. At First I thought he just was that kind of guy who always look for trouble and kick ass all days. Now I believe he is a nice and a talented boy. =) Now I am going to eat and then play some jujutsu. And tonight when I come home I am going to read a few pages.
Charmed Cole - See you later... Pheobe - Alligator!
Girls! You are absolutely wonderful! You know, when first sentences grab you, it is a sign this book will make a difference.
What do you know about David Copperfield? If he refers to that guy to explain his childhood it will be good to know something about DC. Dickens, by the way,
I don't know very much about David Copperfield. I only know he went through a lot of injustice. If I got it right.
I love the book. I have already read about half the book, And I laugh almost all the time. It's a very amusing book. An example: Holden sits and read a book. The guy, Ackley comes in and disturb him. He come over and stood right in the light. And Holden says: I have been reading the same sentence about twenty times since you came in. Ackley didn't get the hint and ask Holden a few seconds later what he was reading. Holdem answers: A goddam book. Ackley ask then if he find the book any good and Holdem answer. (I love his answer and a laugh minutes after that) - This sentence I'm reading is terrific. Then we can read what he think: I can be quite sarcastic if I'm in the mood.
I can not stop telling you how good the book is. I hope you all enjoy it like I do. It is among the best books I have ever read. I was surprised that it was so good. Bye for now.
I really don't now much about him and I am to busy reading to find anything out =) I'll just wait till I've finished the book! =D Or at least till next week....
hello girls, maybe a litle late to write now hahaha. However I would just like to agree with you all. This book is actually good! The language in the book is quite refreshining and this boy is just so cool! I really think he needs to find the love of his life or something...
I just have to say that i totaly agree with Sandra. Ackley seems so be a wierd guy and Holden has an extremley sarcastic way of beeing. As I wrote above I think that Holden needs something revolutionary to happen if his personality is going to change, love is just an example.
Yes sandra, that would probably be great. I was thinking about Holdens moral that I think is a litle strange. First he is about to go all the way with an prostituted girl and the next day he's beeing very kind to some nuns. Sometimes he's showing up a very cruel and cynical side and the next minute he is a very pleasant and helpful young man. I bet that the nuns never would imagine Holden buying sex just some hours before they meet, or what do you girls think?
My sweet sweet Rebban. I totally agree with you. Sometimes he is showing up a very cruel and cynical side and the then suddenly he is a very nice and helpful boy. When he meet the nuns he really enjoyed to talk to them and I believe that he was honest to us when he said that. I believe that he need a radical change in his life to change his personality, I think he needs a girl to love... Jane for example.
Yepp, here I'm at last! :D I haven't wrote a damn sentence untill know, kind of awkward.. I think the book is interesting and have some points. The connection to his brother and sister and of course his parents... I also think the book had a great and fun beginning as Sandra and Emma thought. I like his thoughts and them make the book alive when he starts to explain why people are stupid morons, sonovabitches and phony. I like when he say the word corny, a word he use quite much. Or even better when he say: "That killed me" Over to what Rebban wrote about the nuns, the prostitute and Holden. I totally agree. The nuns must have seen Holden like a very sweet Christian boy. His reaction when he blow the one of them in the face with the cigarette-smoke was interesting. He is really a very kind lad, sometimes. ;) I can't understand why Holden said he loved that PHONY girl Jane? He wasn't serious! His thoughts was really different about her. In any case, they wouldn't have match.
I wrote wrong! THE PHONY GIRL is not Jane! Her name was Sally :) I think or hope, the book will end with that Jane and Holden meets and became close friends and will come into a lovley relationship. Absolutely.
"The trouble with girls is, if they like a boy, no matter how big a bastard he is, they'll say he has an inferiority complex, and if they don't like him, no matter how nice a guy is, or how big an inferiority complex he has, they'll say he's conceited. Even smart girls do it."
Isn't that true really? Many girls choose bastards to guys over and over again...But why?
I think Holden is nice but sometimes he is really annoying and immature. Like when he is meeting Luce, why is it wrong to get a older girlfriend? Grow up Holden!
Hey, I was thinking about something, maybe this Sally was not a phony at all, maybe it's Holden himself that is the real moron in this book. I mean that sometimes it seems like he thinks he's so better than other people. He has always something to complain about even if he does not now the person! Sometimes I get angry with him when I'm reading, if he thinks that he's so smart why don't he do something about his situation instead of horsing around with people he has bad thoughts about? Tell me that girls!
I believe that he is horsing around because he don't know how to behave around other people. I think he is so immature and ironic because he is afraid of what people will think of him, maybe he is afraid to get hurt.
Yes I also think that he maybe is the moron in the book... What do you say Rebban?
Well Martina, if we suppose that this Luce is in the same age like Holden, atleast under 20 years old and he has a relationship with a woman that is about 35 years old I think Holden has reason to ask Luce about that, I don't think he was so judging, probably just curious =).
"The thing is, it's really hard to be roommates with people if your suitcases are much better than theirs - if yours are really good ones and theirs aren't"
Sometimes he seems to be crazy, why does he cares about this kind of stupid things? Why does he let the look of some suitcases destroy his thoughts about other people?
Who said you was not allowed to make up yor own words Martina? hahahaha. I think it's true that Holden provokes people around him a lot, sometimes I don't now if it's on purpose or not, but this is the dificult side of him.
I think he has been in loved with Jane his entire life but have been to cowardly to say something.
He has a missing piece in his life, love and security. I think his parents always have put him in the last place and because of that he has became the way he did.
He took his brother Allies death very hard and he misses his little sister Phoebe very much and he and his brother that have moved, seems to havelost the contact.
Martina, you really got some very good points of wiew there! I agree with you, a person like Holden can not be comfortable with who he is. Even if he think he is the smartest person walking on the earth he does not like his situation, I do not even think he likes himself. Well, thanks for this "multi-conversation", see you all tomorrow at 9.45. Take care, bye for now.
Naw. Martina I don't think all girl's like that... Hard question why girls meets the wrong boys. Ehm, sometimes girls is stupid..? Not me,- not we ;)
YES, Holden is childish sometimes, like when he met that smart Luce. He just blow his chances to have friends when he is like that..
Another thing. Rebban, you don't understand, it's nothing wrong with the relationship that Luce and the elder women. Luce haved grown up, so should you ;) I wonder what kind of women she was.. In person.
I don't think that girl Sally is phony at all, it's something with Holden. His way to speak to certain people is rude..I just wrote that Sally was phony because Holden said it.
I agree with you Martina and Rebban. He haven't come over Allie. I almoust cried when Phoebe asked what Holden really likes. Holden was thinking about different things and had hard to come up with something, then he said: "I likes Allie" '(...) Sally: "Allie's dead".
okey. What a stupid ending! I hate it! I wanted a good ending for Holden but no, they could not give me that. Now I've read a whole book that is all depressing. =( I want everything to be good for Holden, everything to work out. Because I really like him. He is not a mean kid. He deserves that. Right?
Sorry, I couldn't turn up yesterday. I was working out.. I havn't read your comments as good as I would, but I looked trough them a little.
maybe Holden doesn't want to let people that close into life because he is afraid to lose them? I mean...his brother Allie died from him. Holden doesn't want to have serious feelings to anyone because he doesn't want to get hurt again. He has went a little bit into the shadows I believe, if you think about his Mother. She has never went on in her life since Allie died. She has not went through it. She is so nervous and maybe does not take her time to sit down and talk to Holden.
The relationship between Holden and his sister Pheobe is just lovely. When Holden went home and sneak in to Pheobes room (D.Bs room) and wake her up..It was so wonderful that she almost jump at him and put her arms around his neck. So adorable.. He tells her that he bought this record she loves to her but he accidently drops it and it went broken. ( It was really sad when he did). Anyway, and Pheobe want to keep the parts. I like that little girl.
Ooh, and it was scary to read that part when Holden wakes up by Mr. Antolini patting on his head. I got scary "vibes" (if that is even a real word, I took it from vibrations, in swedish: vibbar), when I read that. I liked Mr Antolini before that, but then he did that and destroys my picture of him.
I believe like you do, Emma. (heeh, I tried to NOT use the expression: "I agree with you...". I don't know if I succeed.) The ending didn't solve anything. It was confusing. Perhaps it's meant to think a little bit yourself about his future. Maybe the book should just put something in your head to think about.
I thought we were going to talk about the book today. It is a bit enoying that we did not know about it because if we had known about it we could stay home. Martina only had that lesson to day. Poor you, sweety. Anyway, I am disappointed of the book. It tourned out to be a real disappointment. I liked it in the begining as you all know. But it was so monotonous. (Haha, learnd a new word today) Well, Holden did teach us some new words to. Like "horseing around". And yes, I still like him even though I know you don't. But I can't help it. I think he has a great personallity. So, now I gave you all something to argue about. =P
My opinion is that on of the themes in the book is loneliness. Maybe Holden is like you said Sandra, afraid to lose somebody again if he let them in his life.
I was totally confused about Mr Antolini, why did he do like that? Is he gay in secret or what (excause me now, I just wonder)
I'm also dissapointed of the book, I really would like to know how it went for Holden. A really BAD END!!!
Well now it's time to sleep for me, see you tomorrow.
One more question, why didn't you said that we hadn't a lesson today Elisabeth? Will we have our book session next Thursday then?
Yes, obviously I had not told you I would not be here Thursday. I was asked to accompany SP2 to Mönsterås for the day and had said yes. I thought I had informed you all. Sorry about that.
Yes, next week computers are booked for the written assignment. I will take the groups and individuals who have, for any reason, missed a speaking session during these two lessons. We will talk either on Tuesday or on Thursday.
Thanks for being such good sports and active readers in this novel round. I have enjoyed discussing and reading your comments very much.
Nice discussion you've got here! My friends have abandoned me and are not so good at this, so I've read your comments instead (hope that's okey). But I had to stop when you started to write about the end :D The book sounds interesting so maybe I read this one next time. Bye!
As a teacher of French and English at the upper secondary school of Nybro, Åkrahällskolan, I am always keen on new ideas for teaching.
I started during the Easter holidays 2008 with http://www.hultmansfranska.blogspot.com for my students, myself and the exchange we had with a school in Mamers, France.
This English blog is for my classes in English A, B and C. I will publish assignments and links to good sites for the work. My students will also be co-writers and to begin with we are going to use the comment space to discuss eg. the novels we read.
I have students for teacher's training now and then. They will also participate in writing this blog. "Fröken Frida" was here for 5 weeks during autumn 2008.

I don't know, haven't started to read it....:-p
I just read a hole page...yeah for me....
"If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you'll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don't feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth."

OK I will add a link about David Copperfield:-)
Charles Dickens' "David Copperfield". :-)

Yes, I vote for Jean to be that revolutionary thing you are talking about, Rebban..
Yes sandra, that would probably be great. I was thinking about Holdens moral that I think is a litle strange. I believe Holden is quite judging against Luce. Sometimes he is mean and it seems like he almost wants to provoke Luce...
So what if they have a big age different... (I probably made up a new word now hahaha)
For heavensake where is everybody?! I have no patience to wait...
I believe that he is notice such things that's really is unessential and on those things he is create a picture of people.. Often a wrong picture.
Maybe because he think that he is so much better that everybody else. He cares much more about stupid thing than he does to get to know the person...
Who said you was not allowed to make up yor own words Martina? hahahaha.

Excellent work here, friends.
So what themes have you discovered in the novel?
What would be the message?
What does the writer want to point at?
Let's talk about that next week.
okey. What a stupid ending! I hate it! I wanted a good ending for Holden but no, they could not give me that. Now I've read a whole book that is all depressing. =( I want everything to be good for Holden, everything to work out. Because I really like him. He is not a mean kid. He deserves that. Right?
